MONTREAL - With their leadership convention just two weeks away, federal Liberals are showing increasing enthusiasm for the possibilities of the Internet -- including the possibility of nasty personal attacks against each other.
Yesterday, the Internet link to a homemade attack ad questioning Bob Rae's credentials as a Liberal was circulating among party members and was featured on Liberal blogs.
Using the Sister Sledge song We Are Family as a soundtrack, the video features quotes from Mr. Rae, criticizing the Liberals during his previous life as a New Democrat.
"Choosing between Liberals and Tories is, at times, like choosing between cholera and leprosy," Mr. Rae is quoted as saying.
The ad was posted anonymously to YouTube.com by someone using the name RayDaze.
Chinese firm willfully misunderstands YouTube
CHINESE INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER China.com has launched a new streaming video service, V.china.com. China.com bragged in a press release that the new site differs from other video sharing sites by using all its own material, or material of contracted partners, thus dodging the copyright issue bullet. Also, unlike contender youtube.com, users will not be able to upload their own videos. Some programs featured on the site include the "Straight Show," supposedly similar to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, because, after all, China is famed for its biting political satire. Another show on the site is called "Crazy White Collar," which is about the lives of Chinese professionals. We're still waiting for Crazy Arrest Blogger. Xiaowei Chen, executive director of China.com said in a press release that the site will be "leveraging TV programs from our content provider partners to provide our users with rich choices of videos." Also being discussed are advertising opportunities for the site and other such commercial claptrap.
The NHL is very smart to hook up with YouTube
Colleague Kara Yorio blogged this week to criticize hits to the head and specifically mentioned one particular incident. That got me thinking. Which, of course, a man should never do. Like most puckheads, I'd seen the hit. It was one of those man-on-man explosions that make video screens across the NHL and leave fans groaning and grimacing. But it didn't leave me with the impression of being a cheap shot or a dirty hit. So I did what any red-blooded hockey fan would do when confronted with this question: I went back for another look. And that other look came from YouTube.com There, in all its angles and with gamecast commentary was the Oilers' Raffi Torres, ramming Red Wings forward Jason Williams and knocking him into next Tuesday. Parts of my body that don't ache suddenly ached.
YouTube: On its way to $1.6 billion in revenues?
Over the years, Credit Suisse Group (ADR) (NYSE:CS) has made millions in fees advising its marquee client, Google Inc.(NASDAQ:GOOG). In fact, the firm was an advisor on the $1.65 billion YouTube, Inc. deal. To avoid conflict problems, the analysts at Credit Suisse did not publish anything.
Well, now the embargo is over.
As should be no surprise, Credit Suisse put a $600 price target on Google. Oh, and of course, the commentary on the YouTube deal was certainly upbeat. True, there were the necessary disclaimers -- such as possible lawsuits. But, hey, those can be dealt with, right? Actually, today I did a piece for BloggingStocks on this very topic.
For next year, the revenue estimate is about $160 million. However, Credit Suisse thinks it could ultimately go to $1.6 billion.
